Horton Financial Planning LLC 

Thomas Horton, CFP®, is the founding principal at Horton Financial Planning, LLC (formerly Horton & Associates), an independent, fee-only financial planning firm in southeastern Michigan.

Tom founded Horton & Associates as an engineering consulting firm in 1996.  He gained valuable insight and expertise while building and running this successful small business.  Prior to forming H&A, Tom had a successful career in engineering and was on the management team at two automotive suppliers as well as a major automobile manufacturer.

Over the years, Tom realized that even the most intelligent, successful people often lacked sufficient financial planning knowledge. They were looking for an objective professional advisor to guide them in achieving financial security.  This influenced Tom to pursue the financial planning profession.

Tom explains his transition into the financial planning field this way:  “I found myself offering advice informally to family and friends and realized that there was a real need for more professionals who would truly put the client’s needs first.  It is extremely satisfying to help people reach their financial goals in a manner that I truly believe in.”

Professional and Education Background

• Tom holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from GMI (now Kettering University).
• He is a Registered Investment Advisor in Michigan.
• He holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation granted by the CFP Board of Standards.
• Tom completed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificate program through Kaplan College. In November of 2003, he passed the ten-hour CFP exam administered by the CFP Board of Standards.
• Tom is a member of The Garrett Planning Network, Inc. (GPN), an international affiliation of professional fee-only financial advisors dedicated to providing competent, objective financial advice to people from all walks of life on an hourly, as-needed basis.
• Tom’s commitment to continuing education keeps him current on new laws as well as innovative financial planning and investment ideas. He subscribes to numerous trade, personal finance, and investment publications, as well as additional Internet resources.
• He constantly monitors the financial markets, tax legislation, and economic trends to keep apprised of how changes in these realms affect clients’ situations.
